The English Language Training Institute offers diverse types of programs to meet the different needs of our participants: University Preparation (Intensive English program), Custom Programs, and ITA Testing and Training. For specific details about each program visit the Programs page.
Yes, all students (full-time or part-time) participating in the University Preparation program are required to have health insurance. Please visit the UNC Charlotte Student Health Center’s insurance page for more information. Students participating in a custom program should contact the Office of Intercultural and Educational Experiences with any program-specific questions.
No, we currently do not offer any scholarships. The ELTI also does not differentiate between in-state and out-of-state tuition.
No, you do not need to take the TOEFL, IELTS or other language proficiency exam in order to apply for an ELTI program. Once accepted, all new students will be tested in order to be placed in the appropriate level.

Yes, your spouse and other eligible dependents can take classes part-time at the ELTI. Please contact the ELTI at elti@charlotte.edu to inquire about the cost of part-time study.
Tuition and UNC Charlotte Student fees must be paid during the registration period. Payment is expected in full at the beginning of the term. Checks, money order, or cash must be in U.S. dollars and paid at the UNC Charlotte cashiers office. You may also use a valid MasterCard, American Express or Visa credit card. For bank wire transfers, contact the ELTI office staff before sending any funds.
Sponsored Students
Sponsoring agencies must provide an official letter of sponsorship covering the period of enrollment. Students must have this sponsorship at the beginning of the term of study, or pay their first semester costs and be refunded later, once the sponsoring agency has offered a financial guarantee AND paid the bill.
Yes. Upon completion of the University Preparation program and acceptance into an undergraduate or graduate program at UNC Charlotte, students are able to transfer their SEVIS record to UNC Charlotte.
Students are able to live on the UNC Charlotte campus. Please visit the Housing and Residence Life website for living options, costs, and application materials.
The English Language Training Institute (ELTI) does not provide a pick up service from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) or any other nearby airport. But there are a variety of transportation options available at the airport you can take advantage of including taxis, Uber, and Lyft.

Yes! A deferral is when a student needs to postpone their admission date. There are many reasons why a student may need to request a deferral. ELTI will allow students to request a deferral for the next admission date as long as they complete the following steps:
- Submit proof of a visa denial letter or a late visa appointment date.
- Please send us proof of your paid I-901 fee.
- You must reapply to ELTI, including filling out a new application, paying the $90 application fee, and submitting all new documents if they have expired. As a reminder bank statements must be valid within 6 months.
We do not have a limit on the number of deferral requests an applicant can request.
