Pre-Arrival Information

ELTI Sample Schedule

For the University Preparation program, students attend classes for a minimum of 18 hours per week. The fall and spring semesters are approximately 15 weeks each and the summer semester is approximately 11 weeks, with longer classes each day in order to accommodate the same course content as the fall and spring semesters.

Housing

On-Campus Housing: ELTI students may apply to live on campus. On-campus housing fills up very quickly. You should apply for on-campus housing as early in your application process as possible.

Off-Campus Housing: Numerous apartment complexes are located within walking distance of the University or accessible via public transportation or University shuttle bus. Some apartments may be furnished; you should ask the leasing office. Most contracts are for one year, and it is difficult to break these contracts if you change your mind about where you want to live.

Meals

The university offers a wide range of meal plans and dining accounts for students to choose from, as well as a variety of dining options on campus.

arrival & check-in

New students should plan to arrive in Charlotte at least 10 days before the start of New Student Orientation. New students must check in with the ELTI staff at the designated time on the first day of New Student Orientation. You are able to enter the country up to one month before the first date of classes listed on the I-20. We suggest using that time to settle in and find a place to live.

New Student Orientation

All new students are required to attend the New Student Orientation on campus. New Student Orientation consists of two days of introductions, placement testing, a review of the program and policies, and social and cultural programming. Placement & Promotion

For the University Preparation program, all new students are tested at New Student Orientation in order to be placed in the appropriate level. After one week, instructors meet to review all placements to ensure that students have been placed in the correct level. Placement for following terms depends on final grades at the end of each semester. Students must receive passing grades (C or higher) in all three classes in order to move to the next level of the program.
